How Much Does a Wedding Cost? US & UK Averages and a Category Breakdown

Published on · 3 min read

Averages are useful as a reality check — not as a target. Here is what the major studies report, how costs split across categories, and how to build a budget around your own priorities.

Average wedding cost

Averages are pulled up by a minority of very expensive weddings, so the typical couple spends less than the average. Location matters most: big-city and popular-destination weddings cost far more than the same wedding elsewhere.

How a budget usually splits

CategoryStarting share
Venue & catering~45%
Photography & video~12%
Attire & beauty~8%
Flowers & decor~8%
Music & entertainment~6%
Rings~3%
Stationery & website~2%
Transport, cake, favours, officiant~7%
Contingency~9%

This is a starting split, not a rule — move money towards what matters most to you. Our free budget spreadsheet uses the same split and updates as you enter quotes and payments.

The biggest lever: guest count

Because catering, venue size, rentals and stationery all scale with guests, cutting the list usually saves more than negotiating any single vendor. At The Knot's reported ~$292 per guest, ten fewer guests is roughly $2,900.

Costs couples forget

Service charges and taxes on catering, vendor overtime, delivery and set-up fees, alterations, hair and makeup trials, postage, tips, and the marriage licence. Keep 5–10% back as contingency.

Planning an Indian or multi-day wedding?

Multi-event weddings add venues, catering and decor for each function. Budget each event separately — our budget calculator works in your local currency.

Set your budget in three steps

1) Agree who is contributing and how much. 2) Choose your top three priorities and give them more than their usual share. 3) Divide the rest using the split above, keep a contingency, and track every quote and payment in one place.

Where the money goes, with tips to save

CategoryWays to save
Venue & cateringChoose an off-peak day or season; serve family-style or a buffet; reduce guest count
Photography & videoBook fewer hours and skip getting-ready coverage; choose one of photo or video
Flowers & decorUse seasonal flowers and greenery; reuse ceremony flowers at the reception
AttireShop sample sales, rent suits, choose one outfit instead of several
MusicDJ instead of a band; playlist for cocktail hour
StationerySend digital invitations; print a few keepsakes

Who pays for what

Traditions vary by country and culture, and today most couples contribute themselves, often with help from both families. Have the money conversation early and in writing: who is contributing, how much, and whether contributions come with expectations about guests or plans.

Destination weddings

Destination weddings are often smaller, which can lower the total even when the per-guest cost is higher. Remember that guests pay their own travel, so give them plenty of notice and a clear idea of costs on your website.

Tracking your budget

Record every quote, deposit and balance in one place as you go. Our free wedding budget spreadsheet calculates your split and remaining balance, and the payment tracker reminds you before each due date.
