Save the Date Messages for Your Wedding
A save the date message announces only the essentials — the couple's names, the date and the city — and promises that a formal invitation will follow. Send it 3–4 months before a local wedding and 6–8 months before a destination wedding so guests can book leave and travel.

Optional: an engagement photo, the venue if it's confirmed, a hotel block deadline for destination weddings.

Save the date timing by wedding type
Local wedding (most guests within driving distance): send 4–6 months before.
Wedding in peak season or on a holiday weekend: send 6–8 months before.
Destination wedding or many international guests: send 8–12 months before, with a hotel block deadline.
Short engagement (under 6 months): skip the save the date and send invitations 8–10 weeks before.
Etiquette tips
- Local wedding: send save the dates 3–4 months ahead. Destination wedding: 6–8 months ahead.
- Only send a save the date to people who will definitely get a full invitation — you cannot "un-save" a date.
- Include the city even if the venue isn't booked yet; guests plan travel around it.
- A digital save the date can later be upgraded into the full invitation at the same link, so guests only need one link.
Frequently asked questions
What should a save the date message say?
The couple's names, the wedding date, the city and a line saying a formal invitation will follow. For destination weddings add where to find travel and stay details.
When should I send save the dates?
Three to four months before a local wedding and six to eight months before a destination wedding, so guests can book leave, flights and hotels.
Can I send a save the date on WhatsApp?
Yes. A short WhatsApp message with a link to a digital save the date is now the most common format in India, and the same link can later show the full invitation.
Do I need a save the date and an invitation?
A save the date is optional but strongly recommended for destination weddings and weddings in peak season, when guests' calendars and flights fill up fast.
Do I need to send a save the date to everyone?
Only to guests you are certain to invite. Anyone who receives a save the date must receive the full invitation later.
Can a save the date be digital?
Yes. Digital save the dates are now standard, and one wedding website link can later carry the full invitation, schedule and RSVP.
