Getting Married in Spain: A Mallorca Destination Wedding Guide

A civil marriage in Spain starts with a marriage file (expediente matrimonial) at the Registro Civil — and registries open it where at least one of you lives, so couples who live outside Spain usually cannot marry legally there. That is why most destination couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Mallorca. If one of you lives in Spain, the file needs both of you, an adult witness, birth certificates and a certificate of marital capacity, legalised and translated.

If one of you lives in Spain: the legal process

  1. Contact your Registro Civil. Ask the civil registry where you live for its checklist and an appointment to open the marriage file — the appointment opens the file; it is not the wedding.
  2. Attend with a witness. Both of you attend with an adult witness who knows you and can confirm there is no legal impediment, each bringing ID or passport copies.
  3. Provide documents. A signed application, sworn declarations of civil status, full birth certificates, and — for foreign nationals — a certificate of no impediment or marital capacity, legalised and translated into Spanish.
  4. Approval, then ceremony. Once the file is approved you can set the date for the civil ceremony.

Why most couples choose a symbolic ceremony in Mallorca

Spanish consular guidance tells couples to contact the civil registry of the municipality where they plan to marry first, to confirm whether the marriage is possible and what the deadlines are — and regional registry requirements tie the file to where one partner lives. For couples who live in the US, UK or elsewhere, that usually rules out a legal civil wedding in Mallorca.

A symbolic ceremony removes the paperwork entirely: you sign the legal documents at home (a short registry or courthouse ceremony), then celebrate in Mallorca with any officiant, at any finca, beach or cathedral view you like. Guests experience exactly the same wedding.

If you plan a church wedding, speak to the parish early about how the marriage would be registered civilly.

Can foreigners legally get married in Spain?

Usually only if at least one partner lives in Spain, because the marriage file is opened at the civil registry where one of you lives. Most non-resident couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Spain.

What documents are needed for a civil marriage in Spain?

A signed application, sworn declarations of civil status, full birth certificates and, for foreign nationals, a certificate of no impediment or marital capacity — legalised and translated into Spanish.

Is a symbolic wedding in Mallorca legal?

A symbolic ceremony is not legally binding on its own; you marry legally at home before or after, and the Mallorca ceremony is the celebration.
